Charles is a human (mutant) of a short height and a lean build, with pale skin, bright blue eyes, and dark brown hair. He typically wears clothes that could be described as geriatric: waistcoats and tweed. He has a generally pleasant expression, oft given to gentleness and sympathy, though for all of his emotional expression, he is not typically open with most people.

Charles has built a lifetime reputation on being caring and compassionate to his fellow mutants. He refuses to give up on people, always believing they can be saved. His greatest attribute is his ability to believe in hope and to never give up, no matter the odds. Throughout his adult life Charles has taught and trained mutants, to not only deal with their abilities but more importantly how to live in and cope in a world that fears them. He became a mentor and father figure to many mutants, giving them a home when many were lost.
Though compassionate and caring, he is typically a deeply private person, preferring to give everything to other people and give nothing of his own troubles. He has a dry sense of humor, though he doesn't often tell jokes, but is occasionally given to mischief.
For a long time, Charles was essentially an avowed pacifist, who would only ever condone violence as a defensive strategy. Over time, however, he began to see the necessity of stronger methods for the mutant cause.

Charles was born into a wealthy British American family; his father was a scientist, and young Charles was determined to follow in his footsteps. When Charles was nine, his father died in an nuclear science accident, and his mother remarried not long after to a man named Kurt Marko. Kurt had only married Sharon for her money, and quickly become violently abusive to both her and his son Kurt. Charles, fearing for both of them, used his telepathy to take on the burden of their pain, so that they wouldn't have to suffer as much. But he was clumsy, a child fumbling with telepathy, and so often he took far too much. Around this time, a young Raven took shelter in the mansion, and Charles telepathically manipulated the rest of his family to accept her as a member of the family. Eventually, Sharon died from complications of alcoholism.
Cain accused his father of murdering Dr. Xavier, and the resulting fight destroyed some of Kurt's lab equipment, and caused an explosion which killed Kurt, though he managed to drag his two children to safety first. Charles would inherit the mansion, and a lifelong bad relationship with his step-brother.
As a young man, he attended university to earn a Doctorate in Genetic Science, where he intended to become a Professor and lecture. He and Raven lived together, and began to realize that there were more people in the world like them. They met various others, like Erik Lehnsherr, and a group of teenagers that Charles took under his wing. After getting caught up in a mission for peace, and helping Erik find his childhood tormentor, Charles was accidentally shot in the spine, causing paraplegia.
He started a school, but though it thrived for a few years, it dwindled between the draft for Vietnam and mutants disappearing. He closed it, and sank into depression, taking a serum to rid himself of his telepathy and let him walk again. Later, he would restart the school, and this time it would truly begin to flourish.

charles is able to overhear loud thoughts and emotions from everybody in an 150 mile radius. it is difficult for him to turn this off, but he can shield himself against specific people if he chooses

charles has a wide range of applications of telepathy, including: reading minds, speaking to them telepathically, viewing memories, sensing emotions, taking control of other people, translating language, essentially possessing them and seeing through their eyes, making other people unable to see him, changing others perceptions, manipulating memories, and pain inducement.
